Veteran ESA Program

Happy Tails is thrilled to announce our Military Veteran Emotional Support Animal (ESA) program!

Want to donate to Cody's Heroes? Click here!

Cody's Hero's: Happy Tails Military Veteran Emotional Support Animal (ESA) program! This program is designed to support our Military Veterans and their emotional needs, as well as our animals in finding a great forever home. This program will be free of charge to our Veterans to include the support dog from Happy Tails.

Cody's Hero's is over seen by an Iraq war vet and purple heart recipient.

Some dogs are born with the natural ability to be support animals and we want to pair these dogs with veterans that can benefit from the support of a dog. Being an animal rescue gives us access to many different dogs. Our team works with approved veterans to carefully select the best fit from a handful of potential candidates.

Each veteran will meet with a certified ESA instructor who will review the training plan and provide the veteran with the tools and support needed for this journey. This program offers the specific training needed for the dog to become a well-mannered canine in public and once they finish the training program they will be certified as a Canine Good Citizen through the American Kennel Club.

In order to apply for this program there are a few requirements:

1. Be willing to provide a Department of Defense form 214 (DD214) to verify service.

2. Provide a doctor’s note stating the need for a Emotional Support Animal.

3. Be willing to drive to our adoption center in Fridley MN on a weekly basis for training.

4. Phone interview with our staff.

5. In person meeting with trainer and ESA candidate dogs to choose an appropriate support dog.

6. Positive attitude and desire to participate and follow guidance in training.

After completion of the program you and your Emotional Support Animal will be ready to take the state public access test! This allows you to bring your Support Animal into public areas within the state. If interested please apply by filling out the form located on this page and you should hear a response within 48 hours.
